Following its announcements of 5 May 2021 updating the New Industrial Strategy proposed in 2020, the European Commission has additional indicated that it’s going to rely fairly heavily on business to deliver on the main challenges confronted by our economies and societies in Europe. This is especially the case in relation to sustainability, digital transformation, and global competitiveness, in addition to the necessity to overcome the disaster provoked by the Covid-19 pandemic. The EU Recovery and Resilience Plan launched in Spring 2021 is basically building on the potential of European industry to design and produce the building blocks of the dual green and digital transition. At the same time, the EU is shaping a dense regulatory framework that doesn’t all the time support the freedom and suppleness wanted for companies to grow and compete globally.
The European know-how industries, and specifically our pumps, compressors, taps and valves sectors, have for a really lengthy time considered the enhancement of their international competitiveness inside the challenges of societal and environmental challenges, notably by contributing to the preparation of energy effectivity and ecolabel regulations. In parallel, digitalisation has offered increased alternatives and brought new challenges, including debates on the appropriate regulatory level (sharing of industrial knowledge, synthetic intelligence, cybersecurity, etc).
These developments, amidst ever more fierce worldwide competitors, require that public authorities and business within the EU work more and more extra intently to design and deploy strategies that reinforce our competitiveness and our contribution to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This would be the topic of the preliminary debate kicking off our Joint EU Policy Conference, which will convey together key policy makers from the three EU policy institutions in charge of the Industrial Strategy and three Executives representing and illustrating the achievements enjoyed, and challenges still confronted, by these three key sectors of business.
Specific Technical and Policy Issues
As the regulatory panorama across Europe, and indeed the entire world, turns into ever more advanced, the burden on business solely will increase. It therefore falls to sector specific commerce organisations, such as Europump, CEIR and Pneurop, to establish and advise on those technical and coverage issues most related to their respective sectors. In our explicit enviornment, that relates, in fact, to the manufacture, distribution and use of pumps and all pump associated equipment – a huge and essential subset of business, given the width and breadth of pump purposes.
Against this backdrop, one of the primary issues when determining the core themes for the joint conference was to maintain a direct reference to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). Within this focus, the three associations intend to focus on how, together with the importance for corporations to handle technical features impacting their daily business operations, they think about the constructive function of industry in addressing societal challenges. Indeed, all the periods could have a technical theme matching the most applicable UN SDG, and with illustration from the European Commission along with technical experts from business and/or research institutes, they’ll every be reflective of the current legislative terrain, because it relates to pumps and pumping methods within the following key areas:
Circular Economy & Eco-design (Relevant UN Sustainable Development Goal no. 12: Responsible Consumption and Production)
Industry’s Digital Transformation and Innovation (Relevant UN Sustainable Development Goal no. 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure)
The restriction of use of materials and substances of concern (Relevant UN Sustainable Development Goal no. 6: Clean Water and Sanitation)
The regulatory and legislative panorama across Europe is changing into more and more complicated, and industry, in all its guises, must be aware and ready for what is coming. By participating with these trade organisations that represent your best interests, you can keep abreast of all of the compliance developments as they have an result on your business and the areas by which you operate.
